Travel insurance is an inexpensive way to protect your travel plan
investment. We never expect to have to cancel travel plans but that is
what travel insurance is all about – the unexpected emergency that might
cause you to cancel or postpone a vacation. Almost all travel plans that
you make are subject to a penalty. The amount of that penalty usually
relates to the amount of time prior to the trip date that cancellation
is initiated. Some plans are totally non-refundable. Scheduled airline
tickets, unless purchased at full price, are usually not refundable.
Major airlines will usually make exceptions for serious illness and
death in a family. It is always important that you make sure of what
penalties and under what conditions refunds are made when you make
travel plans. Unless you don’t mind losing some if not all of your
money, you should consider protecting yourself by purchasing travel
insurance. When investing in travel insurance you should be sure that
the policy covers all reasonable possibilities for the need to cancel.
Some “insurables” to consider are: trip cancellation, interruption, &
delay, baggage delay, loss, damage, medical & dental expenses, air
flight accident, rental car damage, emergency medical transportation,
and advice for various possible situations. Depending on your own health
it might be important to be certain that your insurance covers
pre-existing conditions. Finally, some policies provide coverage for a
company that goes out of business before or during your vacation. You do
need to check the fine print on any possible policies that are offered
along with your package to see if these coverages are included.
If not, it might be wise to purchase trip insurance that covers it all.
The travel protection that we use provides the domestic and
international traveler with a policy that covers all of the
possibilities indicated above. In addition, they provide the traveler
with a 24 hour emergency hotline assistance service that will afford the
traveler with medical and legal referrals, assistance with obtaining an
emergency cash transfer, assistance with replacing lost tickets and
passports, and with obtaining emergency prescription refills.
